How to Get Honest Feedback From Your Players | Champion Her Game

Coaches Corner · Player Voice
When 3 players speak for the whole team

How do you get honest feedback from your squad?

As a coach, you can only act on what you know, right?

Training finishes. You ask:

“Did you enjoy that tonight?”

A few players shout “Yeah!”

Great session. Happy players. Job done.

Then next week, five players turn up.

There could be a hundred reasons why.
But suddenly you're wondering whether that “yeah” told you as much as you thought it did.

You asked. →
So what's the problem?

The problem isn't that you didn't ask. You did.

And it isn't that your players weren't being honest.

But think about who actually answered.

Every team has those few players who'll answer first. They'll tell you which drill they loved, what they want to do next week and exactly what they thought of the match.

That's great. You want those players to have a voice.

But what did everyone else think?

  • Maybe one player enjoyed training but didn't feel very confident.
  • Maybe another loved the football but felt on the outside of the group.
  • Maybe someone simply said “yeah” because everyone else did.

None of them necessarily lied to you.
You just didn't get the whole picture.

↓ The Answer

A team answer isn't the same as every player having a voice

You don't necessarily need to ask more questions.

You need to make it easier for every player to answer for herself.

That means giving players opportunities to respond individually — without having to put their hand up, speak in front of their teammates or be the one person saying something different.

⚽ Take this to training

The three players who always speak up matter. So do the thirteen who didn't.

So how do you →
hear from everyone?

That's one of the reasons we built Your Voice Matters into CHGConnect.

Players get simple, anonymous check-ins about how they're experiencing things like enjoyment, confidence, belonging and development.

You're not trying to replace the conversations you already have with your players. You're adding another way to hear from the ones you might not otherwise hear from.

So instead of relying on:

“The girls seem happy.”

you can start building a better picture of how the whole squad is experiencing being part of your team.
