Champion of the Month: Freyah Bruce (Brucie)

At Champion Her Game, we believe sport is about more than the score. It’s about courage, leadership, and the moments where a girl discovers her real strength.

This month, we’re proud to celebrate Freyah Bruce — Brucie — aged 11.

Brucie has played for Holbeach Utd Girls for four seasons. She joined with little confidence and only a basic understanding of the game, but she wanted to try — and she kept trying. Over time, she grew into a strong centre‑back and was named captain in her first season. She found her voice, her confidence, and her place in the team.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

At a tournament last season, the team suddenly had no goalkeeper. Brucie stepped forward — not because she knew the position, but because she recognised her teammates’ strengths. She didn’t want to take a faster runner off the pitch, so she chose to go in goal herself.

And she played brilliantly.

Holbeach won every game on their way to the semi‑finals, only missing out after a tense penalty shootout. It was an incredible achievement, and it ignited something in her.

Her coaches saw it immediately. Her passion grew. Her confidence grew. Her commitment grew.

They asked her to take on the role permanently — and she embraced it.

Since then, Brucie has invested in herself in every way she can. She takes one‑to‑one goalkeeper training. She trains weekly with an older team. She plays match days with Holbeach. She joined her school football team as goalkeeper.

She’s taking advantage of every opportunity to learn, improve, and play.

But her progress goes far beyond football.

Her confidence has grown. Her friendships have grown. And she’s now part of a community that feels like family.

This is why we’re proud to name her Champion of the Month.

Because leadership isn’t just about wearing the armband. It’s about putting your team first. It’s about recognising strengths — including your own. It’s about stepping forward, even when you’re unsure.

Brucie did all of that.
