Building Confidence

1 of 6

Your squad. Your data.

Her warm up started
long before she got here.

You can sense it the moment she arrives.

A girl's mental state is the biggest factor in her performance — bigger than her ability, bigger than your drills, bigger than your tactics.

Low confidence walking in means low performance walking out.

Your girls just told you where their heads are.
Now you know where to start.

Your anchor

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I feel like I'm part of the team

"This is your strongest confidence signal. A girl who feels she belongs will weather almost anything. A bad game. A hard session. A fallout with a teammate. She comes back because this is hers. Protect what she's feeling — and build more of it."

This session

Step back and ask yourself — what is it that makes her feel this way? Is it how you speak to her? The girls she trains next to? The role she has in the squad? Whatever it is — it's working. Now work out how to replicate it across the girls who aren't there yet.

The warning signal

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I'm not sure if I fit into this team

"A girl who isn't sure she fits has already started the conversation in her head about leaving. She just hasn't said it out loud yet. Partner her with someone welcoming in your squad. No big deal — you do it for everyone. That's the point."

This session

Assign her partner deliberately. Choose someone warm, established, secure in the squad. One session of feeling genuinely included can shift weeks of drift. She won't know you did it on purpose. That's exactly right.

She's asking you

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I would like to talk to my coach about how I fit in

"This is the highest trust signal in the tool. She's not going to start that conversation. But she's just told you she's ready to have it. She gave you the opening. Now use it."

This session

After training. Away from the group. Start with — I just wanted to check in. You don't need to fix anything. You just need her to know you noticed. That's enough to change everything.

Before she kicks a ball

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I do not feel comfortable in my training kit

"A girl uncomfortable in her kit is managing two things at once — her sport and her anxiety. That is an enormous load on top of football. Her confidence before she touches the ball is already compromised. This is fixable."

This session

Normalise leggings under shorts — no questions asked. Check her bib size. A quiet word: is there anything you need? Remove the anxiety before training starts and watch what she does with the space.

Confidence

Remember

Confidence isn't built in one session. It's built in the space between sessions — in every interaction, every piece of feedback, every moment she felt seen.

"The most valuable asset a girls club has isn't its pitch. It's a coach who gets it. You get it. Now use it."
