Puberty & Girls in Sport

1 of 4

Your squad. Your data.

She's not being lazy.
She's not losing interest.

Her body is doing something enormous.

On those days — her value isn't measured by her position on the pitch.

It's measured by whether she's still there.

Your job is to create the space that makes staying feel better than leaving.

Before she kicks a ball

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I do not feel comfortable in my training kit

"As girls develop, kit becomes more than kit. White shorts. A top that goes see-through in the rain. A bib that doesn't fit. She's managing her body and the game at the same time. That is an enormous load. And it starts before she even touches the ball."

This session

Normalise leggings under shorts — no questions asked, no comment, no drawing attention to it. Check bib sizes. A quiet word: is there anything you need? Remove the anxiety before training starts and watch what she does with the space you've created.

Creating the space

Her Voice Matters — she told you

I sometimes feel like I don't want to come to training

"On the days her body won't let her perform — she still needs to be part of the squad. Not on the bench. In the game. A role that keeps her involved, keeps her connected and keeps the habit of showing up alive."

This session

Give her a role alongside you. Warm up lead. Assistant coach for the session. Drill organiser. She's still there. She still matters. She goes home feeling part of it — not left out of it. That's the difference between a girl who comes back next week and one who quietly doesn't.

Remember

You don't need to be an expert in puberty. You just need to know enough to not make it harder for her.

"The coaches who keep girls in sport through this phase aren't the ones with all the answers. They're the ones who created a space where she felt safe enough to stay. That's you."
